Buying and Selling

Summary

We talked about  buying and selling. Our discussion included sayings, shop types and the differences between NZ and other countries. We also looked at our rights and who to go to for help if there is a problem with a product or service.
Vocabulary
  • Haggle : means to talk back and forth with someone to try and get a better price for something. For example - the taxi driver tells you the price will be $85 and you say a better price would be $60. After talking you might agree on $75
  • Negotiate : means to talk with someone so you can both agree on something. It’s like when you and a friend want to play different games, so you talk and make a deal to choose one now and play the other later.
  • Bargin : can mean two things
    1. A good price – When you get something for a lower price than usual. Like buying a cool toy for $5 when it normally costs $10. That’s a bargain!
    2. To negotiate a price  – It also means to talk with someone to agree on a fair price or plan. The same as haggling (above)
  • Barter : Trading things without using money. For example, I will give you my car and caravan and you give me your 4WD.
  • Trade : Giving something and getting something in return.  for example: "I’ll trade you my motor bike for your caravan".
